Oldsmobile For Sale

If you are looking for that classic Oldsmobile for sale, then perhaps we should take a look at what most folks don't know were some of the best muscle cars during the Muscle Car Era in the 1960's and '70'sbased on the Olds Cutlass design, the Oldsmobile 442.

When you take a look at the history of Oldsmobile, you can find that their muscle car roots can be traced back to what a lot of folks consider to be the "Granddaddy" of muscle cars, the 1949 Olds Rocket 88.  This was the first car to integrate the largest V-8 engine with a midsize chassis that would become the definition of what made a muscle car.

So, naturally when the "muscle car boom" hit in the 1960's, Oldsmobile answered its competitors with the Oldsmobile 442 in 1964.  Just like everyone else, Oldsmobile needed a midsized car in order to compete, thus the 442 was essentially a fancier model of the Cutlass design.  Now, why was the 4-4-2 named as such?  It had absolutely NOTHING to do with a supposed 442 cubic inch engine, but rather was a moniker for the car having a 4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed manual transmission, and a dual (2) exhaust.

As each year of the muscle car race passed, the 442 would receive upgrades to keep itself in competition with everyone else.  For example, in 1965, the 442 would get a boost with a 400 cubic inch, 345 hp V-8, compared to the smaller 330 cubic inch, 310 hp V-8's that were introduced in its first year.  Over time, the 442 would get some of the best engines of the time with massive 455 cubic inch, 390 hp, high-performance V-8's in '68.

Of course, with the 442 being an Oldsmobile, it had to retain the Oldsmobile reputation for being classier, more up-scale cars.  That being said, just about the only indication that these monster muscle cars were anything more than a suave ride were the simple 4-4-2 badges they sported.

If you take a look anywhere online, you will be able to find one of these classic Oldsmobile for sale.  What is most unfortunate, is that so many muscle car enthusiasts don't know about the Oldsmobile 442 and how it easily competed with the best of the pony cars by pulling low 14.10 second and even 13.90 second quarter mile runs in tests.  These cars may have been a little classier than the competition, but by no means were they prissy when it came to sheer muscle and performance.
